GENERAL RULES / FAQ's

What is FootGolf?

Foot  + Golf = FootGolf; also described as "Soccer Golf".  Simply put, its golf using a soccer ball and large 21" cups with similar rules.  As with regular golf using "strokes",  to win in footgolf, you want to get the  soccer ball into the hole with fewer kicks or "strokes" than your opponent(s).  In head-to-head match play (much more  fun), 2 teams or individuals play to win as many "holes" or "goals" as  possible.  An example is if team A wins 3 holes, team B wins 4 holes, and they tie 2 holes, team B wins 4-3. MLFG cash prize events will often use a hybrid of the 2 formats.

Basic Rules of Play:

  1. To start ("tee off"),  you may kick your ball from a position up to two yards behind the tee markers at the designated teeing area.  If there are no clear markers,  ask a course/event Marshal or event rep.  Make sure your kick will not interfere  with other players or golfers.
  2. The ball must be played in a single movement.  It's not allowed to push the ball with the top of your foot to "lift"  it or bottom of your foot to "roll" it with elongated contact with the  ball.  But a backwards heel kick is pretty dope!
  3. Wait to play your next shot until your ball has come to rest fully.   However your group can agree to all kick at the same time or staggered  to quicken the pace of play.  It is not legal to stop the ball from rolling from the wind.
  4. Play the ball where it lies as in golf. You are not allowed to  remove jammed objects. or the ball.  Exception;  you may mark the spot and temporarily move the ball when it may  obstruct another player’s kick or ball in any way.  Ball to be returned  when it is no longer in the way.  (exception is on a golf green, water  hazard, or "grounds under repair" area)
  5. Do not kick a ball from the golf greens. If the ball comes to rest on a golf green, move it to the spot at which it entered the green. No penalty.
  6. Water/general hazard, "Grounds under repair" hazard, out of bounds. If  the ball lands in a hazard or out of bounds, retrieve and replace it  within 3 feet from the closest safely kickable land point from where the ball entered  the hazard (which may be defined by stakes), and no closer to the hole. Or player may re-kick from previous position. Receive a one-stroke penalty with either choice.
  7. Sand hazard / trap:  If the ball lands in a sand trap or hazard, player should walk to the  ball taking the shortest route.  No practice swings allowed (as with  golf) and please rake your footsteps upon leaving hazard (as with golf).
  8. Order of play: Established based on previous hole score. The player/team (all team members) with the best score kicks off first, then next best, and so on. If same score, use a coin toss or rock paper scissors. On course, player/team farthest from the hole is the first to kick the ball. Repeat until balls are "holed" (in the hole and round is complete).

General Info

Scramble Format:  If  you've ever played in a charity golf tournament, you know what  "scramble" style is.  As a 2-person team, each teammate kicks their own  ball.  The team then moves one of the ball to the location of the better positioned ball (chosen ball) and both players make their next kick from there. Ball placed no further than 1 foot from chosen ball position and no closer to the hole. So if one person shanks it into the  water and the other hits the middle of the fairway, both players can take their next kicks from the fairway without penalty as if the water ball never happened.  This is repeated throughout every kick until one  of the teams' ball goes into the cup.

Pace of Play and Golfers:  Golfers  generally don't like footgolfers on the course. Remember that It IS mainly a golf course, but by paying your green fees, you have a right to enjoy it as well.  Think skiers and snowboarders when snowboarding was  new... With that said, it will help the growth of the sport if we are  polite and play in between the golfers shots (as they should do for you as well).  Footgolf is MEANT to be played during the lull between one  golf foursome and another golf foursome.  Usually everyone is pretty  nice, respectful, and curious.  As players we are the Ambassadors of the  sport, and the course will appreciate us for representing it well.  During tournaments, time is reserved just for footgolf play with no golfers interfering.

Mulligan: Mulligans are a do over or a "re-kick". If  you don't use it, you loose it.  When claiming a mulligan, team must  tell opposing team, and only one player on the team may re-kick.use Mulligans may be earned or purchased depending on the terms of the event.

Equipment:

Footwear- Outdoor cleats are disallowed at golf courses so you may wear  indoor, turf cleats, tennis shoes or something similar that is closed toe.  No boots such as Timberlands,  steel toes, or similar.  Event  coordinator(s) or golf course representative may disallow footwear upon inspection.

Game Ball- MLFG cash prize events will use standard balls for an even playing field as with any professional sports league. Ball may be included and/or additional replacement balls available for purchase at a possible discount from retail. If team looses all balls available during play, and is unable to purchase replacement, they may share 1 ball, or a low quality ball approved by MLFG official may be available, or team forfeits with a DNF (Did Not Finish) declaration.

Official ball is affordable and accessible to all. Ball options may expand as quality, affordable, easily accessible choices become available and agreed to by the board of advisors. Gone are the days of a player or team having an unfair advantage by using a discontinued $500 specialty ball that takes away the spirit of fair play and inclusiveness. In general play, any standard soccer ball is acceptable.

Attire- Golf or soccer shorts, leggings,  shirts, jerseys, polos are all acceptable. If you can wear it to play golf, or to a nice gym, it is generally ok.  Tank tops for guys, political,  vulgar, criminal, or aggressive messages are not allowed. Golf course and event staff may disallow certain attire and request a change.  Refunds are not issued for any equipment violation since it is easy to  change into something appropriate.

Groupings: 4-somes will be arranged by tournament officials for maximum enjoyment, score integrity, and competitiveness for cash prize events. Non cash prize events have more flexiblity with requests honored as best as possible.

Disputes and spirit of the game:  If a situation arises where a team or onlooker has a significant  disagreement in play or believes a team is attempting to circumvent or  "out smart" the rules in an unfair and advantageous way, they should:  pause play, leave balls where they lie, and get a hold of a league or tournament official provided at registration. Other teams should play through. If and only if  necessary, the paused players may temporarily remove their ball if  requested by the teams playing through, then replace them in the same  position once the players have played through.  Spirit of the game is to  play with integrity and respect of the course, surrounding vegetation,  structures, staff, and other players.  A player that cheats is robbing  the other players of a fair, positive, and enjoyable competitive  experience while also disrespecting the time, effort and money spent by  event organizers, promoters, course staff, and the non-profit.  Cheaters  will be disqualified without refund and disallowed from future events.  If something doesn't feel right, it's probably not right; so use good  judgement, ask someone first, or don't do it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are adult beverages allowed while playing?

Q: Yes, in moderation. Some courses have beverage carts and and bar that sell on site, however if  they do not, it's generally OK to bring your own as long as its discreet  and you're over 21 of course. Do not offer to and be mindful of minors.

Q: Can we play music while we play?

Q: Yes, at a respectable volume and non-abrasive. Remember  we are on a golf course with other players, families, kids, squirrels,  etc.  Golfers often play music while playing especially during group events. If the team you're grouped with prefers no music, then no music can be played. Quite while other team is kicking is also required.

Q: Can you wear outdoor cleats on the golf course?

A: No, but turf cleats, indoor and tennis shoe are a-OK!  The  golf course doesn't allow cleats due to the risk of course damage to  the course or especially the golf putting green area. Fun fact: golf  clubs usually cause more course damage than your planting foot does.   Respect the course and they will respect us.

Q: Is there an org that does more recreation level events?

A: Yes, the National FootGolf Association (NFGA). visit them at: www.theNFGA.com. They have been around since 2017 and hold fun, festive, events and fundraisers.

Q: I'm totally new to the sport, can I play?

A: YES, ABSOLUTELY! If  you mark "new" on the experience question when signing up,  you will be  paired with someone friendly who's played before that will be happy to  show you the ropes and explain while playing. We were all new at some  point!

Q: Can I volunteer or put on my own events with your help?

A: Yes, Definitely! A big goal of the MLFG and affiliated NFGA is to get more people involved and grow the  sport. Send us an email and we can chat on the different ways you can  partake and even earn income as a side hustle!

Q: How do I own a pro team or participate in future events?

A: Fill out a free application and follow MLFG on socials. With your contact information provided, a MLFG rep will get back to you to discuss the simple process that's setup to be accessible to ALL and will add you to event notifications.
